Well, as fate would have it, a couple days after getting the car's engine cleaned, I did something I'd managed to avoid in almost 15 years of ownership - contact with another car.
I was in a grocery store parking lot which had spaces on a diagonal to the left and right. I looked around, checked my mirrors, and began to back out. Before I had swept my mirrors again I hear a bad noise and slowly pulled back into my space. I get out, and the woman opposite me must have done pretty much the same thing as me, at the very same time. When we started the aisle was clear, but with both of us backing up, it quickly wasn't.
Neither of us was happy but we were civil and exchanged driver and insurance info. My car didn't show much (and half of that buffed out), but I had a bad feeling about hers.
I was willing to let my car be, and both of us wanted to avoid our insurance companies if at all possible. Unfortunately it pretty much sheared off her whole bumper assembly, so to fix it, the whole thing had to go - $1200. We agreed to split it and both walk away.
Guess who's getting a backup camera for Christmas?
